Animal Kingdom Vacation Club Lobby

Weaving is the preferred way-of-making of the indigenous southern and western African cultures. From baskets to shelters, interlocked and bent reeds serve as both structure and ornament.

The Lobby at Disney's Animal Kingdom Vacation Club builds upon this primitive tectonic tradition using contemporary materials and high-tech fabrication methods; the exposed woven and bent steel is both structure and ornament in this intimate, inspiring gathering space. Secondary steel structure is woven through the primary steel, creating a surface of support for the roof of 'thatch' above.

Situated within the 'string of beads' which comprises the 300+ room club, the Lobby becomes the jewel of the necklace. Its position is thrust into the Savanna and raised 20' above zebra-level, creating an ideal animal viewing platform. The end-wall of floor-to-ceiling glass effectively disappears; the guest feels both connected to the game of the Savanna and secure within their hut on the plain. Great attention to light-control allows the ambient, natural light of the Savanna to dominate. 'Designing with darkness' ensures the comfort of both animals and guests. It also heightens the mystery, romance and exoticism of this most unique space.
