A reconsideration of the classic urban villa, this high-performance luxury home is planned for central Denver's premier neighborhood, Riverfront Park.

The design responds to several competing factors: the desire for both privacy and natural light, the need for protection from the urban streets but connection to the outdoors, the vision of a bold, contemporary home adjacent to one of Denver's historic districts.

A private central courtyard helps to mitigate several of these disparate desires. Both the courtyard and the street edges are formed by two simple bars of space, one clad in brick and the other in Colorado Buff Sandstone (materials connecting this house to Denver architectural traditions). The masonry provides thickness and protection at the street edges, but gives way to expansive walls of glass facing the courtyard. Louvers help to veil the interior space from both solar gain and unwanted incoming views.

Roof-integrated photovoltaics, a solar hot water system, high-performance glazing combined with louvers and large roof overhangs, local materials and optimized orientation assist in creating one of the highest-performing residences in the region.
