An International Ideas Competition for the Sustainable City of the Future
Nordhavnen, a port district of Copenhagen, requested innovative, future-oriented solutions for its redevelopment; 4240 answered. Ideas were to address the challenges of global climate change and unsustainable resource consumption, as well as the local pressures of congestion and diminishing affordable housing.
What is the "Sustainable City of the Future"?
Our answer reconnected the people of Nordhavnen with the processes which sustain them; local food production, fresh water collection, small-scale fuel production, and access to wild landscapes. Sustainability here is freedom from global economic and social pressures through a new model of urbanity. The submittals were discussed at the UN Summit on the Climate, which took place in Copenhagen in 2010.
